Water filters for the home

Updated: 6/6/2016

THIS IS A WORK IN PROGRESS. This page will be updated periodically. Please check back again in a week.

This post will help you determine which filter is right for your home.Very few chemicals are regulated by the EPA when it comes to drinking water so more and more chemicals are getting into water supplies. These chemicals cause all kinds of problems and some are endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) which cause havoc with the body's delicate hormone system. Studies show a high corellation of these EDCs to other illnesses like inflammation, diabetes, obesity, and learning disabilities.

The government won't help the people so it's up to you to protect yourself with a quality filter that works.

Tests of water supplies here
EWG tested tap water of big cities in 2009. This report contains the highest rated and lowest rated water utilities out of 100 cities tested. PDF here.

Detailed tests of filters are here
  1. AquaTru tests. See infographic further down page.
  2. Big Berkey black filter test results from 2014. More detailed test results which includes copies of the lab results along with every chemical filtered out! :)
  3. Consumer Research water filter testing. Mar 2016. Some of these comparisons are invalid because their information comes from the retailers themselves, like Amazon and Walmart. Source here.
  4. Good Housekeeping tests water filters to filter out pharmaceuticals, PFOA, BPA, estrone, fluoxetine, ibuprofen, atrazine (pesticide), tonalide, TCEP, DEET, sucralose and other contaminants. Feb 2012.
  5. MUST SEE. Natural News tested a few filters for removal of many heavy and radioactive metals such as: Aluminum,  Copper, Arsenic,  Strontium,  Cadmium,  Cesium,  Mercury,  Lead,  Uranium. Enter your email to see the actual results. Another page for results, no email required.
  6. NSF certified water filter models are here. "Water filters are tested and certified to NSF/ANSI 53 and 58 to ensure they reduce contaminants, including lead, per the requirements of the standards."
  7. Study: Removal of selected pharmaceuticals and endocrine disrupting substances using Granular Activated Carbon - Isotherm and Kinetic studies. They tested removal of:  naproxen, carbamazepine and nonylphenol. PDF here.

Products that I like
Doulton UltraCarb sink top, attaches to faucet, $125usd. This means it needs water pressure to work and may not work if used as a gravity filter in an emergency.
