Turn any web page into an EPUB

I don't like PDFs because they can't increase the font size while reading them or wrap the words to any device screen size. On a tablet, a PDF leaves me zooming into a PDF and scrolling left and right, up and down, just to read the text. So I prefer EPUB. I found this website to change any web page into an EPUB. My first test was a journal article that had some type of Javascript left side table of contents, and it worked great. The resulting epub removed the Javascript TOC and the EPUB came out great.

They even have a bookmarklet that makes it easier to use. Go to dotEpub.com for more information.

I didn't do extensive testing with a variety of web pages but this would be handy for journal articles that are only available online, or newspaper articles, or saving project or how-to pages.

Free bubonic plague ebooks in EPUB format

Bubonic plague (aka Black Plague) sometimes pops up even in the US. If you want to read more about it, here are some free EPUB books, well out of copyright.

  1. "Epidemics of the Middle Ages". by JFC Hecker. EPUB format.
  2. "The Black Death" (of 1348-49) and "The Dancing Mania" 2 books in one EPUB file, 1888 version. By JFC Hecker. The Dancing Mania was when people suddenly started dancing and jerking around. This was coincidental with the Black Plague of 1348, and appeared here and there for a couple hundred years after. Oddly enough the best cure was threatening to throw a "dancer" into an ice cold lake.
  3. "Plague and Pestilence in the North of England." By G. Bouchier Richardson, F.S.A. NEWC. 1852. It has info on many plagues throughout time in a localized area. Focused around the area Newcastle-upon-Tyne. EPUB file.

For each file,
  1. Click on the link above.
  2. On the upper right of the browser window, click the 3 dots in a horizontal row.
  3. Choose Download from the drop down menu.

Firefox addon: Grab web page as EPUB file

GrabMyBooks will grab a single webpage, or follow links to a depth you desire and then create an EPUB file for your portable device (or any device). This can be used for downloading online manuals, online books, online magazines, etc. But the address you specify must be an actual HTM, HTML, or other file, it will not grab items if the web address ends in a slash.

Notes:
  1. Takes only one address at a time but you specify depth of grabbing, and whether or not you want to get pages external to the original address, or just similar to the original address.

Also, Acrobat Pro X can download a website into a PDF, but it also needs a web file as a starting address. This does not work with the free Acrobat Reader, you must buy Acrobat Pro.

Example valid web file: http://www.mysite.com/index.html

Example invalid directory name: http://chuckrblog.blogger.com/

If the web address ends with a slash, it's not a file and cannot be used with Acrobat or GrabMyBooks to download a site.
